CLEAT CUTE TV adaptation update!

I'm so glad I can finally share this with y'all:

A television adaptation of CLEAT CUTE is in development at Amazon!

I am monumentally pumped. As was already announced, the show is being produced by Future Shack and A Touch More, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird's company. Our showrunner is the hilarious Sarah Tapscott, who you know from The Sex Lives of College Girls and New Girl. This project could not be in better hands.

Because the book is being adapted for television instead of as a movie, the story will expand rather than be whittled down. As such, the title has changed, too: "Playing the Field" is an ensemble comedy. Of course there will be the romance between Grace and Phoebe, but we'll also get more of the rest of the New Orleans team, navigating life as female athletes. "Playing the Field" is laugh out loud funny and sexy as hell, and it has a whole lotta heart, to boot.

I'm sure you want more information, but I either don't have it, am not in charge of it, or cannot share it with you. What I can say is that there are many steps to making a TV show. In development is not the same as in production—we don't yet have a premiere date or a cast or even a full series order. While we're on the right path with the right people, nothing is guaranteed. If you want to help us get to the next step, make sure you're loud about how much you want to see this show. We know there's an audience for it. We know it can be successful. Be loud enough that those facts are undeniable.

In other news...

  • My next book is not due out until 2027, but it's worth the wait. We're doing authenticity reads right now; one of the leads is a grayromantic autistic trans lesbian, and I want to make sure her characterization feels authentic and isn't harmful. I'm not sure we've actually announced this book anywhere, so it's maybe breaking news to say it will be called FLOUR GIRL. My first official sequel, the story follows the baker and florist hired for Ginny & Elsie's wedding. June, the florist, might be my favorite character I've ever written.
  • Speaking of trans characters, did y'all participate in the Trans Rights Readathon? I finally read The Prospects by KT Hoffman. It's been on my shelf since pub day, but I had yet to read because I knew it would wreck me. And it did. (Complimentary.)
  • This announcement has been in the works for a while, and I first drafted this newsletter before Trans Week of Visibility and Action, so I included suggestions of what to do. The week has long passed, but loudly supporting trans folks is not something that should only happen at certain times. A great thing you could do, besides give money to trans people, is call your reps voicing your opposition to HB 7661, a bill aiming to ban any book that even mentions trans people. That link takes you to 5Calls, which can help you find your reps and their contact info, and also provides a script for your phone call.

UPDATE: This was originally published on Substack, and for that, I apologize. I had outgrown my previous newsletter provider and switched to Substack because I'd heard of it, and it was free. I did not do enough research, and after sending my first newsletter, people let me know of Substack's own issues with not just transphobia, but also Nazis, hate speech, and COVID misinformation. Kind of ironic that I posted "Supporting transphobia is a choice" on a website that chooses to support...
